Education
We are passionate about education at CERTS. The youth treatment arena has historically underemphasized the role of education. The thought process has been, "Right now we are more concerned with just getting them well. We will worry about the academics later."
We have always disagreed, and we have put our money where our mouth is. Our girls are often bright, capable, and keenly aware of their academic performance (good or bad). Knowing that they are falling behind academically-even if they are progressing in other ways-increases stress and anxiety and is counterproductive to the healing process. In fact, it has been our experience that there is a correlation between academic and clinical breakthroughs-that a girl who gets algebra for the first time (through excellent teaching) is also more likely to confront difficult issues in her life in therapy!
Some of our girls have been diagnosed with learning disabilities (ADD, ADHD, or non-verbal learning disabilities). Their struggles academically can be compounded in a system that underemphasizes education, has large class sizes, and where teachers are not trained to accommodate their unique needs.
To this end, CERTS schools and programs always provide certified teacher-led classrooms, small class sizes, the widest possible educational class options (which vary based on each program's size), fully accredited course work that transfers to future schools anywhere in the country, and an educational experience that is truly exceptional for girls in treatment! Teachers in our schools are trained to work with both the brightest girls as well as those with educational challenges. Our small class sizes and flexibility allow us to customize the educational experience for each student, creating an academic plan that is unique to their needs and situation.
We invite you to come and meet for yourselves the teachers and Education Directors who help our girls make real academic progress while they heal emotionally!
