Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety disorders are one of the most common psychiatric illnesses. While they affect both children and adults, an estimated 40 million American adults suffer from anxiety disorders. The tragedy is that the statistical majority receive no help of treatment, although anxiety can be greatly modified by appropriate care.
Some Anxiety Facts:
- Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S.
- Anxiety disorders cost the U.S. more than $42 billion a year, almost one-third of the country's $148 billion total mental health bill, according to "The Economic Burden of Anxiety Disorders," a study commissioned by ADAA and published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Vol. 60, No. 7, July 1999.
- Greater than $22.84 billion of medical costs comes from seeking repeat care.
- Symptoms of anxiety disorders often mimic the symptoms of physical illnesses.
- It is estimated that people suffering from anxiety disorders are much more likely (by three to five times) to visit a doctor and as much as six times more likely to be hospitalized
- Risk factors for anxiety disorders include negative life events, genetics, and brain chemistry.
